The English Department
English has a long history; it has been the language of communication for many countries for many years. It is also a language for creativity and self-expression, something we want our students to benefit from. In QHS, the English Department aims to help students in becoming independent English language explorers who love to think, express, and share in English. In addition to teaching essential English knowledge and useful communication skills, we hope that students can experience the joy of learning English with their fellow classmates and teachers.
The Aims Of The English Department
Promoting Reading
Reading plays a significant role in learning. It enhances our critical thinking skills and expands our knowledge. Regular reading programmes will be incorporated into our curriculum, and students will be able to learn how to read effectively through using different reading strategies.
Diversity In Learning
Every student learns differently. This also means that every student has their own unique strengths and abilities. We aim to foster their strengths and abilities in class through using various teaching materials and methods, such as composition-creation and corporative learning, so that every student will have equal opportunities in learning.
Confidence In Speaking
Regular discussions and practices will be held inside and outside of class to develop students’ confidence in speaking. Additionally, students may also take part in different activities, such as the English Ambassador, the Drama Club, and Speech Festival Program, to further develop their speaking skills.
Learning through Active Participation
Learning is not just through using textbooks and reciting since sometimes what is being taught are very vague concepts. It is important for students to experience language use personally. English lessons will be activity-lead, where students will be actively engaged in language use through fun games and reflective discussions.
And finally...
Learning Through Joy
Although “practice makes perfect,” what use is there if students do not find joy in learning? In QHS, The English Department’s ultimate aim is for students to enjoy learning English. English lessons will not be static; our teachers have prepared many games and activities and are ready to meet their students with passion. Students learn best by doing what they love, and we hope that by bringing fun into the classroom, they will have an unforgettable learning experience in their English class.
